John Coburn's paintings favour large, stylised shapes, simply designed and painted in glowing primary or earth colours. Coburn described his aim as 'to create formal harmonies of shapes and colours that exist in their own right and at the same time distill the essence of a place, a thing or an incident.'

These principles made his work readily adaptable to tapestry design. His most well-known works include the impressive tapestry curtains for the Sydney Opera House.

Coburn held over 60 solo shows from 1957 throughout Australia. His work resides in the collections of the NGA, all the state galleries as well as numerous regional, tertiary and government collections in every state.
