Anu Penttinen's work is multi-faceted. She overlays several glass bubbles, deeply engraved to reveal a pattern on the contrasting colour beneath. She uses strong pattern and colour with dramatic contrast and a distinctive approach where the front and back of her pieces display different patterns. Further depth is unveiled when the work is illuminated transforming the pieces to reveal glowing bright colours. Penttinen draws much of her inspiration from the vibrations and rhythm of jazz music. Her Scandinavian background, the aesthetics of the 1950s and 1960s and her interest in indigenous art also have a strong influence on her pieces. Simplicity and clarity, light and shadow, order and disorder are all tools she uses to build up patterns in her work that speak a distinct visual language.
