Dean BOWEN

Dean Bowen is an Australian painter, sculptor and printmaker. For over three decades he has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally. In 1999 he completed his Ph. D in Printmaking at Monash University. In 2003 Bowen won the popular choice award in the prestigious Helen Lempriere National Sculpture Award, Werribee Park, Victoria, and in 2008 he was again shortlisted as a finalist. In 2009 he was selected as a finalist in The Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. Bowen has received a number of major public sculpture commissions and has been the recipient of high profile awards including the Tai-he Award, 1st International Print Biennial of Beijing, China, 2000; Conrad Jupiters Art Prize (Sculpture) , Gold Coast City Art Gallery, 1999; Sponsors Prize, 4th Sapporo International Print Biennale, Japan, 1998; Daikin Industries Company Prize, Osaka Print Triennale, Japan, 1997; and the Fremantle Print Award, Fremantle, WA, 1994. Dean Bowen's work is represented in over 70 national and international collections including, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; artsACT, ACT Government; Parliament House Art Collection, Canberra; Artbank; Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne; Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney and Deutsche Bank, Geneva, Switzerland.

Dean Bowen is renowned for his artwork depicting vibrant urban and country scenes. His vision and diverse range of mediums, whether it be painting, sculpture or printmaking, come together to produce images that are joyous, lively and full of humour. Providing a contrast to the typical image of the Australian landscape, Bowen's scenes of urban and rural life are often populated by whimsical and cheerful characters, living harmoniously within their constructed environments.
